The Lone Star College Computer Information Technology Department offers a variety of digital technology programs that can you get trained in everything from Computer Programming, Cybersecurity, Geographic Information Systems, Integrated Technology, and Networking (Cisco & Microsoft). “Once a student earns their AAS, or certification, they can find rewarding careers,” said Heather Cannon, LSC professor of Computer/Information Technology. “Our graduates are working as computer programmers, electronic engineers, web developers, telecommunications technicians, game developers, database/systems administrators, and computer support technicians.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, a cybersecurity professional with an associate degree can earn a median salary of $92,000 annually. The need for a highly trained digital workforce continues to grow as more and more companies rely on computer systems that run efficiently and are safe from cyber-attacks. A cyber-attack can cause a company to lose millions of dollars putting cybersecurity jobs in high demand.

“We are working to get approval to be able to offer a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Technology,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “That would fit in nicely with what we currently offer including cyber security located at our new LSC-Westway Park Technology Center.”

The Texas Workforce Commission predicts jobs in cybersecurity will grow more than 26 percent from 2014–2024.
