Keeping Houston Healthy

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports health care occupations will have the highest projected growth in employment into the next decade. As the baby boomer generation ages, the demand for trained health care workers will continue to put a strain on the health care industry.

The good news is that Lone Star College offers a wide range of health care programs to help meet this growing demand. From nursing programs, to occupational/physical therapy, medical assisting and health information technology, there is sure to be a program right for you.

Salaries for these occupations range from $24,000 to $71,000 per year, but its more than just about how much you can make. Healthcare careers are fulfilling and provide the satisfaction of knowing you are helping in the lives of others.

And there’s even more good news. LSC will begin offering Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees in fall 2020. Students can earn their bachelor’s degree at the same low LSC tuition rates saving them thousands of dollars. When you factor in being able to stay close to home, you can see how the savings can add up.

Wise & Well = Student Success

Physical therapist assistants work to help individuals return to their maximum level of physical function providing therapeutic exercise, functional training, deep soft tissue massage, and physical modalities such as electrotherapy and ultrasound.

The LSC-Montgomery Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program has a long tradition of helping students get trained and get hired, thanks in part to an innovative program called “Wise & Well” where an instructor provides an end of the week afternoon class for the students in their study space.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to decompress and enjoy time outside of the classroom with your classmates,” said Brandan Fox, LSC-Montgomery student. “The cohort setting is great for creating a fun learning environment. You meet new friends who are in the same situation you’re in and makes learning much more enjoyable.”

In the fall, the program is a yoga inspired class and in the spring, it is a pilates inspired class.

“The course of study for a physical therapist assistant is a two-year program, leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree,” said Renee Pruitt, LSC-Montgomery Physical Therapist Assistant program director.
“Successful completion of the program satisfies the academic requirement for applying for the state licensure as a PTA and satisfies the requirement for graduates to take the NPTE, the national licensing exam.”
